    How To Be A Strategic Facility Manager

    Being a facility manager is a busy profession to be in. They must respond to all requests, regulations, orders, and meet all demands and deadlines of the organization, not to mention daily tasks, such as maintenance. Unfortunately, facility managers don’t always have the time to be proactive and devote time to becoming strategic due to the busy nature of the profession.

    When a facility manager becomes more strategic, they can develop a process that can better deliver their services to the stakeholders involved. By putting in the well spent time, it can avoid unnecessary delays, mistakes, disappointments, or compromise tenant comfort, thus, allowing the facility to operate more smoothly and professionally.

    Due to the nature of this task, it can be difficult for facility managers to put a process in place. By following this four-step process, a facility manager can become more strategic in their approach in providing their services.


    Know Your Organization

    Once a facility manager understands the organization’s core mission and values, and has some insight into their goals, it becomes much easier to plan for the future.

    Analyze The Facility Needs

    After developing a clear understanding and definition of the organization and its situation, further analysis must be done to balance current facility needs with long-term needs and issues. Utilize different analysis tools, such as SWOT or have a brainstorming session with key players in the organization, including stakeholders.

    Plan, Plan, Plan

    Now that there is a deep understanding of the organization and the facility, developing a plan to meet these long-term needs must be done. This is relatively easy, as recommendations or decisions will become more apparent and obvious through analysis. Taking a look at primary objectives, gaps, costs, labor, developing alternatives, and providing management with the necessary documents to gain approval, are all major steps to consider in developing a plan. It’s important to note that the plan that is developed is not set in stone, as things can change. Make sure to evaluate it a few times a year.

    Implementation Said Plan

    Once a facility manager has the approval from management to pursue this plan, it’s time to begin implementing it. It’s important to document any changes or issues that arise from implementation, as this will help provide a base for next time this process is done.
